An improved way to perform IPR

Since the introduction of interproximal reduction (IPR) in orthodontics—whether performed with strips, disks, or air rotor instruments—IPR Glide is the first product specifically designed to make the procedure better for both dentists and patients.

One of the first lessons in dental school is clear: never cut dry. Tooth structure requires cooling and lubrication during cutting, which is why all high-speed dental handpieces spray water onto the bur. However, when early orthodontists like John Sheridan performed the first IPR procedures, no one considered lubricating the hand-operated cutting instruments—and it was never taught.

That changed when product inventor Dr. Michael Florman asked himself: If I were the patient, knowing everything I know about cutting enamel, would I want my dentist using a lubricated diamond strip or disk—or one that’s dry? The answer was obvious. From that moment, IPR Glide was born. As for the addition of fluoride? That was the next logical innovation—making a great idea even better.

How to use IPR Glide

Doctors can use IPR Glide during the IPR procedure for enhanced protection and lubrication, and then give it to patients to take home for continued use to restore enamel.

IPR PROCEDURE
  • Step 1

Dispense IPR Glide directly to the interproximal tooth surfaces, or to IPR cutting instruments.

  • Step 2

Perform the IPR procedure and replenish IPR Glide as needed.

  • Step 3

Rinse the patient’s teeth with water and suction, or have them rinse at a sink and spit out any excess.

  • Step 1

    IN-OFFICE POST IPR RENEWAL

Rinse the patient’s teeth with water, and leave them to air dry. Once dry, apply IPR Glide directly to the tooth surfaces where the IPR was performed.

  • Step 2

Have your patient spit out any excess IPR Glide. Instruct them to keep the tooth surfaces dry and avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes. Aligners may be worn to prevent saliva contamination.

AT-HOME POST IPR RENEWAL
  • Step 1

Apply IPR Glide to the inside of your aligners at the location where the IPR was performed. Have your dentist use a marker to indicate where to apply the IPR Glide.

  • Step 3

Allow IPR Glide to remain against your teeth for 5-10 minutes, then remove your aligners and spit out any excess gel. Keep the tooth surfaces dry, and avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can IPR Glide be used with all IPR instruments?

The gel formula lubricates the interproximal area to reduce friction during IPR, and eliminates “cutting dry”

  • Does IPR Glide improve the IPR procedure?

Yes. Many practitioners find that enamel powder can clog diamond strips or disks during IPR, reducing their cutting ability. IPR Glide lubricates the instrument, improves cutting efficiency, and helps keep the surface free from enamel and diamond debris.

  • How much IPR Glide should I use?

Only a small amount is needed to lubricate the instrument or tooth contact. Reapply as needed throughout the procedure to keep surfaces wet.

  • Where should I apply IPR Glide—on the tooth or the instrument?

It can be applied directly to the cutting instrument or the interproximal tooth surfaces. Many practitioners’ experiment with both methods to find their preference, and some use both depending on access and tooth anatomy.

  • Can I use IPR Glide with a high-speed air rotor?

IPR Glide is often used when using slow to medium speed air rotor instrumentation. For high-speed stripping, use water spray during the procedure, then apply IPR Glide afterward to help rebuild and strengthen enamel.

  • What does “During and After” mean on the packaging?

It refers to the fact that IPR Glide can be used both during the IPR procedure and afterward as a prescription fluoride treatment.

  • How do I use IPR Glide after IPR as a fluoride treatment?

For patients in aligner therapy: Complete IPR and rinse teeth with water. Dry with air. Apply IPR Glide to interproximal surfaces, then seat the aligner. Have the patient spit out any excess. Instruct the patient to wear the aligner for 30–60 minutes without drinking liquids. Afterward, remove the aligner, rinse, and resume normal routines.

  • What’s the best method for post-IPR fluoride application?

Apply IPR Glide, then place the aligner to prevent saliva from diluting the fluoride. Maintain contact for 30 minutes for optimal absorption.

  • Where can I buy IPR Glide?

Available from Everbrands/Eversmile and authorized dental dealers like Strauss Diamond.

  • How is IPR Glide supplied?

wo options: 4 mL syringes for easy application, or 25 mL dropper bottles (use with a dappen dish and microbrush).

  • Is IPR Glide harmful if swallowed?

Patients should avoid swallowing, and clinicians should rinse/suction the mouth during use. Small accidental ingestion is not harmful, but use in pregnant or nursing patients should be evaluated case-by-case.

  • What does IPR Glide taste like?

It has a sweet, minty flavor.
